How much does a small business website cost in Bristol?

01The Bristol agency benchmark

Walk into any Bristol web design agency, like Grizzly, Mr B & Friends or Bluestone98, and you'll typically be quoted between £3,000 and £15,000 for a small business website. Bigger studios can quote £25,000 and up for anything with bookings or e-commerce.

That covers discovery sessions, a creative director, designers, developers, project managers and a polished pitch deck. It's good work. It's also more than most local businesses ever needed to spend.

02The hidden costs nobody mentions upfront

The quote you sign is rarely what you end up paying. Watch for:

• Hosting: £15 to £60 a month, often on a third-party plan you have to manage.
• Maintenance retainers: £100 to £400 a month for support you may rarely use.
• Change requests: £80 to £150 an hour after launch. Add a paragraph? That's a bill.
• SEO bolt-ons: £500 to £2,000 a month if you want to actually rank.
• Re-designs every two to three years because the original site wasn't built to last.

03What about a Bristol freelancer?

A good freelance web designer is often the middle ground: roughly £600 to £2,500 for a small business site, less overhead than an agency, and a real person you can talk to. It can be excellent value.

The catch is availability. Freelancers get busy, take holidays and move on. When you need a change made this week, or something breaks, you're waiting on one person. You'll also usually arrange and pay for your own hosting on top. Brilliant when it works, harder to rely on long term.

04DIY builders: cheap until they aren't

Wix and Squarespace start at £7 to £18 a month. By the time you've added a custom domain, a booking widget, a premium template, e-commerce and SEO apps, most local businesses are paying £30 to £50 a month, plus 20 to 40 hours of their own time learning the platform.

And if you're a Bristol salon, tradesperson or café trying to outrank competitors on Google, a slow, templated builder site is fighting with one hand tied behind its back. Page speed and clean code are direct ranking factors.
